A Blandings collection. The ivied walls of Blandings Castle have seldom glowed as sunnily as in these wonderful stories - but there are snakes in the rolling parkland ready to nip Clarence, the absent-minded Ninth Earl of Emsworth, when he least expects it. For a start the Empress of Blandings, in the running for her first prize in the Fat Pigs Class at the Shropshire Agricultural Show, is off her food - and can only be coaxed back to the trough by a call in her own language. Then there is the feud with Head Gardener McAllister, aided by Clarence's sister, the terrifying Lady Constance, and the horrible prospect of the summer fete - twin problems solved by the arrival of a delightfully rebellious little girl from London. But first of all there is the vexed matter of the custody of the pumpkin. Skipping an ocean and a continent, Wodehouse also treats us to some unputdownable stories of excess from the monstrous Golden Age of Hollywood.

Take a pig, a fat-headed earl, a country house, several pairs of frustrated lovers, some scheming outsiders, and all sorts of people who aren’t who they say they are. Mix thoroughly and apply the Wodehouse magic. The result is the lightest of literary soufflees, another instalment in the long-running saga of the Threepwood family, including the head of the clan, Lord Emsworth, his virago sister, Lady Constance, and his debonair brother, the Honourable Galahad Threepwood, ex-boulevardier and solver of romantic problems.

The twenty-five stories in this collection reflect Wodehouse’s own happy schooldays at Dulwich College but they also do a good deal more. Although among his earliest attempts at fiction, they reveal an early-maturing comic talent with flashes of brilliance which foreshadow the later adventures of Ukridge, Bingo Little and Bertie Wooster. And by the way, they give fascinating glimpses of a time when motor cars were novelties, schoolmasters wore mortar boards and gowns, and America was a rising power in the world. The best of them display the author’s love of games and knack for neat plotting. In one, a resourceful teenaged heroine helps a truant schoolboy cricketer by marooning his credulous schoolmaster at the top of a church tower until the match is over. Another describes a boy escaping from the scene of his crime by a passing car, only to be caught out by a last-minute revelation. Several Sherlock Holmes parodies read as what they are – high-spirited experiments – but the longer stories delve deeper into character: together, they recreate a vanished world of school shops, fagging, Latin prep and hearty teas.

Wodehouse revisits favourite places and characters in this gentle late comedy of crossed wires, pining lovers and overbearing dowagers. In possession of a mansion but no money to keep it up or marry his sweetheart, Sandy Callender, Sam Bagshott turns to Galahad Threepwood for assistance. So what could be more natural than for Galahad to help by smuggling Sam under an assumed name into Blandings Castle, where Sandy just happens to be working as Lord Emsworth's secretary? Lord Emsworth, meanwhile, is fighting off the attentions of the forbidding Dame Daphne Winkworth whom his bossy sister, Hermione Wedge, wants him to marry. In the end, Lord Emsworth escapes the doom of matrimony and Sam gets his girl, but only after a delightful tangle of Wodehousian muddles and misunderstandings.

In Wodehouse's final novel, unfinished at his death, the author returns to his favourite part of England. In a classic plot, Vicky Underwood is parted from her fiance, Jeff Bennison, and her uncle, Galahad Threepwood, gamely undertakes to bring them back together. Many old friends reappear to take their last bow: the Earl of Emsworth, Dame Daphne Winkworth, Beach the butler, the Empress of Blandings (Lord Emsworth's prize pig), Freddie Threepwood (his son), G. Ovens, innkeeper, and an array of the earl's formidable sisters, including newcomers Florence and Diana.

A Blandings Omnibus In this wonderfully fat omnibus, which seems to span the dimensions of the Empress of Blandings herself (the fattest pig in Shropshire and surely all England), the whole world of Blandings Castle is spread out for our delectation: the engagingly dotty Lord Emsworth and his enterprising brother Galahad, his terrifying sister Lady Constance, Beach the butler (his voice 'like tawny port made audible'), James Wellbeloved, the gifted but not always sober pigman, and Lord Emsworth's secretary the Efficient Baxter, with gleaming spectacles, whose attempts to bring order to the Castle always end in disarray. Lurking in the wings is Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe of Matchingham Hall, the neighbour with designs on the Prize which must surely belong to the Empress. As Evelyn Waugh wrote, 'The gardens of Blandings Castle are that original garden from which we are all exiled.' This omnibus contains Something Fresh, Summer Lightning and three short stories.

When Lord Emsworth's delectable solitude at Blandings Castle is shattered by the arrival from America of his bossy sister, Connie, soon followed by the scheming Duke of Dunstable and the assorted imposters who are never far from Blandings, trouble is bound to follow - the sort of trouble which, in a Wodehouse novel, involves loony doctors, stolen paintings, young lovers, match-making dowagers and baffled butlers. Beset on all sides by the forces of evil, Lord Emsworth calls for help from his brother, Galahad Threepwood, the Pelican of the title. Gally duly engineers a happy ending for all the good characters, including the lovers, drives the villains out of Blandings, and leaves Lord Emsworth once again in peaceful occupation of his home. An ingeniously plotted comedy from the master of light fiction.

This is a Blandings novel. Unwelcome guests are descending on Blandings Castle - particularly the overbearing Duke of Dunstable, who settles in the Garden Suite with no intention of leaving, and Lady Constance, Lord Emsworth's sister and a lady of firm disposition, who arrives unexpectedly from New York. Skulduggery is also afoot involving the sale of a modern nude painting (mistaken by Lord Emsworth for a pig). It's enough to take the noble earl on the short journey to the end of his wits. Luckily Clarence's brother Galahad Threepwood, cheery survivor of the raffish Pelican Club, is on hand to set things right, restore sundered lovers and even solve all the mysteries.

The Empress of Blandings, prize-winning pig and all-consuming passion of Clarence, Ninth Earl of Emsworth, has disappeared. Blandings Castle is in uproar and there are suspects a-plenty - from Galahad Threepwood (who is writing memoirs so scandalous they will rock the aristocracy to its foundations) to the Efficient Baxter, chilling former secretary to Lord Emsworth. Even Beach the Butler seems deeply embroiled. And what of Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe, Clarence's arch-rival, and his passion for prize-winning pigs? This comic masterpiece is vintage Blandings, and P.G. Wodehouse at his best.

Despite marriage to a millionaire’s daughter and success as the vice-president of Donaldson’s Inc., manufacturers of the world-famous Donaldson’s Dog-Joy, Freddie Threepwood, Lord Emsworth’s younger son, still goes in fear of his aunts when at Blandings Castle. Full Moon tells the story of how he faces them down while promoting the love of Bill Lister and Prudence Garland. A charming Blandings comedy with a full Wodehouse complement of aunts, pigs, millionaires, colonels, imposters and dotty earls.

An early Wodehouse novel, this is both a sporting story and a tale of friendship between two boys at boarding school. Mike (introduced in Mike at Wrykyn) is a seriously good cricketer who forms an unlikely alliance with old Etonian Psmith ('the P is silent') after they both find themselves fish out of water at a new school, Sedleigh. Full of entertainment, the plot reaches a satisfying conclusion as the pair eventually overcome the hostility of others and their own prejudices to become stars. Even readers uninterested in cricket are likely to be gripped by descriptions of matches, but the real meat of the book is to be found in the characters, especially the elegant Psmith, one of Wodehouse's immortal creations, who features in three of his later novels.

In these articles first produced for magazines and substantially rewritten for book publication, Wodehouse reveals his enduring brilliance as a comic writer of topical essays. But the move out of fiction does not mean a move into unfamiliar territory: any reader of Wodehouse's stories will be familiar with the topics covered here which preoccupied him all his life, ranging from Shakespeare, Hollywood and musical comedy, to butlers, thrillers, ocean liners and income tax. A sparkling collection.

'P.G. Wodehouse remains the greatest chronicler of a certain kind of Englishness, that no one else has ever captured quite so sharply, or with quite as much wit and affection' Julian Fellowes Weekend Wodehouse - required reading at country house parties in the late Thirties - remains one of the best introductions to the work of PG Wodehouse. All the favourites are here: Drones Club stories, Mr Mullinger stories, stories of Jeeves, Lord Amsworth and Ukridge.
