Появление быстроходных миноносцев вызвало необходимость вооружения тяжелых кораблей скорострельными орудиями малого калибра. Устанавливаемые ранее орудия 47-мм орудиях QF 3-pounder Hotchkiss не обладали достаточной убойной силой, поэтому было принято решение разработать новые более мощные снаряды и новое орудие для них. Разработка орудий велась компанией Vickers в 1900-1903 годах. Первый заказ на производство 147 орудий поступил в 1904. Орудия предназначались для установки на крейсера и крупные корабли в качестве противоминных пушек. Позже QF 3-pounder Vickers стали устанавливать на корабли меньшего размера. К 1911 году на вооружении кораблей стояло 193 орудий этого типа, но они не стали стандартным вооружением в Королевском флоте. Хотя QF 3-pounder Vickers обладал большей дальностью стрельбы и убойной силой нового снаряда, его скорострельность была ниже, чем у аналогичного орудия Hotchkiss.
