Neutral hues, an ill-fitting man’s suit and wiggling locks of cut hair supplant Frida Kahlo’s (1907–54) usual lively color palette, indigenous Mexican dress and long plaits in Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair (1940). Nevertheless, the painting remains unmistakably Kahlo’s. In the wake of a divorce from artist Diego Rivera, Kahlo turns to her favorite genre, self-portraiture, to express her deepest emotional and psychological urges. Inscribed with the lyrics of a popular song that translate as “Look, if I loved you it was for your hair. Now that you’re without it I no longer love you,” the work oscillates between evocations of a popular culture shared by many and unflinching forays into the private sphere. Curator Jodi Roberts' essay, too, moves between the public and the private as it situates Kahlo’s painting in the context of the Mexican Revolution’s legacy, the Surrealist tradition and the artist’s own life to explore the ways in which Kahlo constructed and reconstructed her own identity.

The arresting pictures of Frida Kahlo (1907–54) were in many ways expressions of trauma. Through a near-fatal road accident at the age of 18, failing health, a turbulent marriage, miscarriage and childlessness, she transformed the afflictions into revolutionary art.In literal or metaphorical self-portraiture, Kahlo looks out at the viewer with an audacious glare, rejecting her destiny as a passive victim and rather intertwining expressions of her experience into a hybrid surreal-real language of living: hair, roots, veins, vines, tendrils and fallopian tubes. Many of her works also explore the Communist political ideals which Kahlo shared with Rivera. The artist described her paintings as “the most sincere and real thing that I could do in order to express what I felt inside and outside of myself."This book introduces a rich body of Kahlo's work to explore her unremitting determination as an artist, and her significance as a painter, feminist icon, and a pioneer of Latin American culture.

'The art of Frida Kahlo is a ribbon around a bomb' - Andre Breton. Frida Kahlo learned about suffering at an early age. She contracted polio when she was six and was seriously maimed in a bus accident at the age of eighteen, which led to injuries that affected her for the rest of her life. She had a legendarily turbulent marriage to the great mural painter Diego Rivera, with whom she formed a strong attachment to indigenous Mexican folk art and a deep commitment to Communism. Admired by the Surrealists and photographed by the greatest, Frida was most renowned for her self-portraits and unusual still lifes. This book traces the extraordinary life of an artist whose unforgettable imagery combined cruelty and wit, honesty and insolence, pain and empowerment.

A concise and insightful overview of one of the most beloved artists in the world. An iconic artist and feminist trailblazer, Frida Kahlo painted images that reflect her self-perception, fears, illness, and passions, often in the face of social taboos. Pride and strength, vulnerability and bitterness intertwine in her art. Drawing inspiration from her biography, Kahlo distilled her life experiences into her subject matter. Her self-portraits, which make up the principal part of her work, often depict a charismatic woman dressed in traditional Tehuana dress. Kahlo wore this attire to signal her Mexican identity, but also to hide wounds from her complicated marriage to the artist Diego Rivera, the bus accident that altered the course of her life, and the sorrow she felt over her childlessness. Though she portrayed scenes with exaggeration and fantasy, Kahlo disagreed with critics who described her as a surrealist: “That is wrong. I never painted dreams. What I portrayed was my reality.”This compact book includes many of Kahlo’s most important works in context, explaining the subjects, ideas, and history that have contributed to her widespread acclaim.
