Amid the endless plains of Kazakhstan, an extraordinary architectural experiment has arisen: Astana. Formerly an outpost of the Tsarist Empire in the barren steppe, the location had developed into a typical Soviet provincial town. However, both internationally renowned and local architects are now designing spectacular and unique buildings in this dynamic city. Furthermore, Astana will host the Expo 2017 which will take place only twenty years after the city was built in the steppe alongside the old centre, based on a masterplan by Kisho Kurokawa. This exhibition is meant to finally promote the Kazakh capital to the premier league of global metropolises. The book documents eighty diverse buildings and projects, examining the contradictory nature at play within oriental traditions, western models and Soviet influences. Therefore, this publication represents a critical analysis of Central Eurasian architecture at the beginning of the 21st century.

Ambitiously designed community buildings, faceless mass housing developments, and a monumental emptiness are the defining features of Pyongyang a city of three million inhabitants rising from rubble after the Korean War of the 1950s. This guide offers unprecedented insights into the capital of what is probably the most isolated country in the world, ruled in the third generation by a first family stubbornly upholding its own brand of stone-age communism.

Дополнительные материалы: Евангелос Коциорис (МОМА), Брайан Харви (Китай), Гурбир Сингх (Индия) и Ольга Баннова (Университет Хьюстона).In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon, this book for the first time ever looks at the artifacts left behind on the moon from the perspective of architecture. The book looks at every single mission – manned and unmanned – that has actually landed on the moon. It covers the time of the beginning of the Soviet and American space race with the landing of Luna 2 in 1959, to the present with China’s Chang’e 3 moon rover. This architectural guide differentiates itself from other scientific and educational books through its abstract approach to the topic of architecture on the moon. The content does not feature science fiction, but rather the question of what exists and what implications these bizarre structures hold for the future of architecture on other planets – as these topics are quite pertinent in today’s world of the commercialization of spaceflight, with SpaceX and NASA planning to take humans to Mars in the next 15 years. The guide brings together authors both from the East and the West. Contributors on the Russian side include Galina Balashova, the famous architect of the Soviet space program, and the expert Alexander Glushko, son of the deceased chief engineer of the Soviet space program, Valentin Glushko. Further contributions by Evangelos Kotsioris (MoMA), Brian Harvey (China), Gurbir Singh (India), and Olga Bannova (University of Houston).

Architecture on the moon is no longer a naive fantasy dreamt up by space-flight pioneers. In fact, various building typologies for lunar architecture have emerged in recent years. Their prototypes are being tested in hostile regions on Earth and are waiting to be deployed on the moon. This book's publication marks the 50th anniversary of the first human landing on the moon. It examines all artefacts that we have sent to the moon, from bizarre technologies to habitation modules for astronauts. This architectural guide thus offers a full retrospective of the history of lunar missions, from the space race during the Cold War through to the missions being prepared by China, India, and Israel in the present day. All of these are considered under the rubric of architecture. At the same time, efforts to commercialise space travel have come to the fore in recent years. New players have entered the stage, competing to utilise the moon's vast and untouched resources. This book also presents essays by and interviews with space experts, including a discussion with Galina Balashova, renowned architect of the Soviet space programme, and a piece by Alexander Glushko, son of Valentin Glushko, legendary head engineer of the Soviet space programme. Brian Harvey, Gurbir Singh, and Olga Bannova provide an insight into current and future developments in lunar architecture, writing on China, India, and the US, respectively.

Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Atacama Desert and the Pacific Coast: even today the apperception of Chile remains remote and indistinct. There is no doubt that its geographical location – confined between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain range – has had a role to play in the relative nescience, although it was the former political situation that led to the country’s isolation for almost twenty years. In fact, it is only in these last fifteen years that Chilean architecture has appeared on the international stage, mostly owing to Mathias Klotz, Alejandro Aravena, Smiljan Radic and Pezo von Ellrichsausen, amongst others. Chile can take pride in having built some genuine Modern masterpieces whilst having preserved a close relationship with its culture. During the twentieth century Europe provided Chile with sources of inspiration. Le Corbusier had a great influence on Chilean architects despite never having visited the country; his followers, such as Emilio Duhart, Roberto Davila and the BVCH office, realised buildings which are today internalised deep in the Chilean psyche. The Bauhaus movement served as another influence for architects such as Sergio Larrain. Overall, this book aims to be a practical reference source of the best architectural works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Chile.

In an era of accelerating population growth, mass urbanisation, and increasing pressure on the natural environment, the megacities of China's eastern seaboard have become a focal point of architectural and urban-design attention. The “reform and opening-up era” has touched China's major cities in different ways, affecting the existing fabric of dynastic capitals, trade hubs, and former European colonies and concessions; this in turn has provided the setting for a range of complex reactions by contemporary architects. The Architectural Guide China provides city-by-city coverage including historic maps and background information on urban form. Building on the authors' years of experience leading architectural study tours, this book is the first comprehensive English-language survey of recent Chinese architecture presented in the form of a travel guide.

Tbilisi, capital of the Republic of Georgia, has attracted increasing international attention in recent years: Buildings play no small part in its reputation, as evidenced by the urban megaprojects enacted by successive administrations, countless real estate adverts shilling surrealist investment properties, and the recent establishment of the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial. Architecture offers perhaps the best guide to the myriad contradictions of the city‘s history: Tbilisi is a Silk Road outpost with caravanserais newer than brownstone Brooklyn. The Orientalist landmarks that prompted many a traveller to invoke the Thousand and One Night were, in fact, usually built by members of a German minority emulating European trends. Today, touts may peddle tours of Brutalist Soviet ruins, but one would be hard-pressed to find clear examples of the style within city limits. This book helps to unravel the different layers of this fascinating metropolis. It provides in-depth profiles of more than 120 buildings, themed guides to many others (sacred architecture, Art Nouveau, Constructivism), and essays contributed by local scholars.
