The definitive collection of artist profiles by legendary journalist and New Yorker writer Calvin Tomkins, from the 1960s to todayWhen Calvin Tomkins joined The New Yorker as a staff writer in 1960, he did not plan to make art and living artists his main subjects. And yet, auspiciously for the magazine and its readers, Tomkins did just that. For the last six decades, his profiles of contemporary artists, from Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg to Cindy Sherman and Mark Bradford, have become the liveliest and most authoritative guide to the art of our time. These six volumes contain eighty-two of Tomkins's profiles, from 1962 to 2019. Balancing insight and observation with wit, candor, and appreciation, Tomkins is a master of the profile-his indelible prose forming fascinating portraits, each a work of art in its own right.

The New Yorker was launched in 1925, and offers reporting, criticism, essays, fiction, poetry, humour, and cartoons. From the very outset, the founders, Harold Ross and Jane Grant, declared that their sophisticated magazine was 'not edited for the old lady in Dubuque'. The New Yorker has also offered great literature in short stories from such acclaimed writers as John Cheever, Roald Dahl, Alice Munro, Haruki Murakami, Vladimir Nabokov, J. D. Salinger, and Shirley Jackson. From the very first issue, the now iconic monocled dandy Eustace Tilley made The New Yorker's covers unique and pointed. These signature traits have continued right up to the present day in the striking and sometimes controversial covers from such artists as Peter Arno, William Steig, Saul Steinberg, Jean-Jacques Sempe, and Art Spiegelman. Selected by Francoise Mouly.

John O’Hara is widely credited with inventing the New Yorker short story, and remains the most-published short story writer in the history of the magazine. Selected from his vast collection of short fiction written over forty years, these refreshingly frank, sparely written stories show him at his best. Exposing a world of bartenders and 'b-girls', car washers and criminals, O'Hara dissects the subtleties that bind humans together and the pressures that separate them.

This Russian Museum exhibition catalogue publishes much more than the anthologized propaganda posters of other survey books. The curators and authors have selected works that show how the propaganda poster evolved as an independent genre both in subject and style. The earliest examples follow the conventions of popular prints (lubki) and folk tale imagery of the tsarist period - images often tell a story with satirical and grotesque depictions of enemies. Prevalent in the early examples is a realism akin to nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art. In the early 1920s a more modern and spare form of poster art drew on experiments of the avant-garde to create new styles.
