Poe Edgar Allan Collected Stories & Poems

Пр-во:

This collection of Poe's work contains some of the most exciting and haunting tales ever written. They range from the poetic to the mysterious and the darkly comic, yet all possess the genius of the grotesque that defines Poe's writing. The stories are so alive with compelling mysteries, vibrant images and unforgettably tormented characters, that it is easy to associate Edgar Allan Poe solely with entertainment and forget that he was also one of the greatest innovators in modern literature. This volume contains all of Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination and Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, and a selection of his poetry. The book is illustrated by several artists, including Aubrey Beardsley, Gustave Dore and Harry Clarke.

Irving Washington The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. And Other Stories from the Sketch Book

Irving Washington The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. And Other Stories from the Sketch Book

Пр-во:

Sage, storyteller, and wit, Washington Irving created such staples of American fiction as the stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." He earned his preeminence in early American literature with the masterpieces in miniature collected here: dozens of stories, travel essays, biographical discourses, and literary musings. "His influence on American writers is unquestioned," wrote Edgar Allan Poe, and his stories have proved as enduring as the Catskill Mountains the author immortalized. "Exceptional talent... I am one of his most ardent admirers. I admired Mr. Irving's work so much, in fact, that I gave it the ultimate praise; I 'borrowed it.'" - Edgar Allan Poe

Poe Edgar Allan The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe

Poe Edgar Allan The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe

Пр-во:

Edgar Poe was born the son of itinerant actors on January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusets. Abandoned by his father and the later death of his mother, he was taken into the foster care of John Allan, a Virginia tobacco farmer. Now styled as Edgar Allan Poe, he distinguished himself at the University of Virginia but was equally adept at collecting debts from his assiduous gambling. His stepfather's disapproval shattered their fragile relationship and Poe left home to seek his fortune. In 1836 he married his cousin Virginia but despite his prolific activities - journalism, poetry, lecturing, short stories, publishing, criticism and experimentation with fictional genres, including the detective novel which he virtually invented with the publication of The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841) - he received scant recognition for his efforts until the publication of The Raven in 1845. The poem's instant popularity gave him a new visibility in literary circles, but his personal situation remained desperate: poverty, illness, drink, and the physical decline and ultimate death of Virginia in 1847 led to his untimely and premature decline. In 1849 he was found sick, injured and semi-conscious in a Baltimore tavern. Taken to hospital, he lingered on for four days, but never recovered and on October 7th Edgar Allan Poe died at the age of 40. He was one of the most original writers in the history of American letters - a genius who, thanks to his dire reputation, was tragically misunderstood during his lifetime. It was not until Baudelaire enthusiastically translated his work that he found a wider audience in Europe, and became not only an enormous influence on modern French literature but also on the acclaimed work of writers such as Dostoevsky, Conan Doyle and Jules Verne.

Poe Edgar Allan The Complete Stories

Poe Edgar Allan The Complete Stories

Пр-во:

Edgar Allan Poe’s gift for the macabre – his genius in finding the strangeness lurking at the heart of things – was so extraordinary that he exerted a major influence on Baudelaire and French symbolism, on Freudian analysis, and also on the detective novel and the Hollywood movie. His psychologically profound stories of encounters with the marvellous, the uncanny and the dreadful represent – in contrast to the optimism of writers like Emerson and Whitman – the other, darker side of the nineteenth-century American sensibility.
