Abstract expressionism-the non-representational use of paint as a means of personal expression-emerged in America in the 1940s, inspired by the innovative work of Arshile Gorky. The Tatarstan State Museum of ine Arts, Museum of the Art of Asian Peoples, Tretyakov Gallery, Nizhnegorod State Museum of Fine Arts, the Smolensk State Museum, and the Academy of Arts contributed works to this catalogue of an exhibition that publishes works from various periods of Roerich's half century of painting: scenes of ancient history, legend, and mythology; set, costume, and curtain design for theatrical works such as Borodin's Prince Igor, Stravinsky's Rites of Spring; and a recurrent theme of Roerich's art: Asia, its severe and beautiful landscape, harmonious settlements, and solemn shrines. As much of a philosopher as an artist, Roerich spent much of his life pursuing and expressing a higher ideal, which he saw in myths and legends and in the timeless landscapes of mountain peoples. At first glance his paintings can seem monotonous but upon closer look one sees the nuances of color and subtle ways in which Roerich interwove the human and the natural worlds. Lipchitz was one of the most notable sculptors who adopted the principles of Cubism and persistently applied them in his works, gaining recognition from both connoisseurs and the general public. Later, moving away from Cubism, he kept his expressiveness and daring approach to form. .Published to coincide with the exhibition in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the present edition reflects on the history of sculpture in the 20th century, factors that shaped its development, and Lipchitz's circle of artists and friends, who influenced his approach. Jacques Lipchitz marked a turning point in the perception of art and, along with Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, became a symbol of the new art. Along with the artworks presented in the exhibition, the catalogue contains additional materials such as an article by the exhibition curator Kosme de Baranano about the sculptor's life and work, an essay by an art historian Mikhail Kamen-sky about Lipchitz's visit to the USSR in 1935, interesting facts about the sculptor's life, previously unpublished images from the archives of Musee d'Art et d'Histoire du JudaTsme in Paris as well as photographs of sculptures and graphic works from the collections of Marlborough Gallery, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and private collections. .This retrospective exhibition is a continuation of the museum's exhibition program aimed at introducing visitors to the work of important modernist artists. Posters of the Revolutionary Era

This Russian Museum exhibition catalogue publishes much more than the anthologized propaganda posters of other survey books. The curators and authors have selected works that show how the propaganda poster evolved as an independent genre both in subject and style. The earliest examples follow the conventions of popular prints (lubki) and folk tale imagery of the tsarist period - images often tell a story with satirical and grotesque depictions of enemies. Prevalent in the early examples is a realism akin to nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art. In the early 1920s a more modern and spare form of poster art drew on experiments of the avant-garde to create new styles.
