Nota biografica Leopoldo Alas «Clarin» fue profesor, escritor y critico literario. Nacido en Zamora, pronto se traslado a Asturias, de donde provenia su familia. Se doctoro en derecho y llego a ser catedratico en la Universidad de Zaragoza y en la de Oviedo. Sus articulos periodisticos provocaron encendidas polemicas entre los escritores de su epoca. Muchos de sus ensayos y criticas se reunieron en Solos de Clarin (1881). Tambien fue muy importante su labor como autor de cuentos y novelas cortas, entre los que sobresalen las colecciones El senor y los demas son cuentos (1893), Los cuentos morales (1896) y El gallo de Socrates (1901). Tras aparecer La Regenta, su obra mas conocida, publico una segunda novela, Su unico hijo (1890); en lo dramatico, tan solo consiguio estrenar una obra de teatro: Teresa (1895). Su ideologia fue progresista, y fue a partir de 1890, al sentir que no pertenecia a ninguna de las clases sociales del momento, cuando sustituyo ese dinamismo historico por una moral mas individual que reivindicaba la emancipacion del hombre por la cultura. Murio en Oviedo en 1901. Incluye: El texto se acompana de notas de vocabulario y explicaciones culturales, siempre contextualizadas en la propia obra.
